Pediatric schistosomiasis treatment receives regulatory approval in Brazil

News News

Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) has approved the new schistosomiasis treatment developed by the Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium specifically for children aged 3 months to 6 years.

The approval, granted on 29 September 2026, marks another important milestone in expanding access to treatment for preschool-aged children. It also enables local production of the 150 mg tablet by Farmanguinhos/Fiocruz in Brazil, through a technology transfer agreement with Merck.

Developed through more than a decade of international public-private collaboration, the new pediatric treatment addresses a longstanding gap in care for young children with schistosomiasis. The approval in Brazil builds on earlier regulatory achievements, including a positive scientific opinion from the European Medicines Agency in December 2023 and WHO prequalification in May 2024.

This milestone is a testament to the power of international collaboration and the lasting legacy of the Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium in advancing treatment options for young children affected by schistosomiasis.
