Global health leaders call for accelerated investment in NTDs
The Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium was represented at the Global Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Meeting in Nagasaki on 12 May.
Held prior to the G7 Health Ministers’ Meeting on 13 and 14 May, the Global NTDs Meeting addressed the topic of accelerating Research and Development (R&D), Access, and Delivery for NTDs.
Our Consortium member, Beatrice Greco, Head of R&D and Access at the Global Health Institute of Merck participated as a panelist in the session Accelerating Access, talking specifically about “Bridging R&D and Access” in the case of the Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium.
The meeting was hosted by the Nagasaki University, JAG NTDs, and Uniting to Combat NTDs, together with our funding partner, the Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Fund. The event took place in two parts with a closed technical discussion meeting in the morning and an open public session in the afternoon. The main objective was to deliver the Nagasaki Outcome Statement with key asks on NTDs to potentially be taken up at the G7 Health Ministers’ Meeting.
Positive outcome
In June, it was announced that the Nagasaki Outcome Statement had officially been adopted by global health leaders, jointly calling for accelerated R&D, access, and delivery for NTDs. In addition to six asks to G7 Leaders to support investments in R&D, access, and delivery, the Statement recognizes that there is a key role for the global NTD community to play. Seven call-to-actions are outlined for the NTD community including developing innovative funding mechanisms to mobilize substantial funding for NTD elimination.
